Diary Entry-The Atherton House

I could have easily put together a ‘haunted’ tour focused exclusively in San Francisco. There are just SO MANY haunted spots in the ‘city by the bay’. Perhaps I’ll do just this at some point down the road.

Until then, I’m wrapping this tour up with a BANG! The Atherton House at 1990 California Street is rife with all kinds of crazy (and ghostly) history. This history includes THREE female ghosts and one male ghost (George Atherton).

The story around this now historic landmark includes George dying at sea and being sent home in a barrel full of rum! If this is actually true, you have to wonder what kind of shape he was in by the time the barrel was cracked open by the unsuspecting butler. I imagine he was in the mood for a glass or two of rum after uncovering George’s pickled corpse.

The ghost of George’s mom AND wife allegedly haunt this property as well. While alive, both women were supposedly quite domineering and found George to be a bit of a nebbish. Maybe George hopped on a boat and skipped town to get away from them?

Last, but not least, the ghost of one Carrie Rousseau haunts the Atherton House as well. She lived in the house from 1923 to 1974. She lived only in the ballroom of the house with over fifty cats living in the adjoining banquet room. Talk about a crazy cat lady!

Given the GLUT of supernatural activity at the Atherton House, I could use a little help. I’ve managed to coerce Mom to join me for this final haunt! She’s not quite 100%, but she assures me she’s feeling strong enough to climb back in the saddle again.

We’re long overdue for some mother/daughter bonding. What better way to bond than by exploring one of the most haunted houses in San Francisco?
