Diary Entry-Coming up empty at Eel River and EUREKA here we come!

It was great to catch up with Jimmy over a beer at Eel River. I’d be lost without his expertise, guidance, and connections. I’m going to have to do something special for him when this road trip is all over.

Without much to go on, we took a look at the area where we ‘thought’ the 1992 incident occurred. Standing on the bank of the Eel River, it was hard to comprehend how one could clearly identify anything, let alone a Sasquatch from nearly 1/4 of a mile away on 101.

This idea was further substantiated when a giant hunter lumbered out of the nearby woods. At first glance, he vaguely resembled a squatch. And, we we were standing from just 50 feet away. Who knows? Maybe the law enforcement officer saw this very hunter back in 1992 from 101.

Many reported Sasquatch sightings are from a distance. Infrequently are they up close and personal. It’s also the case that many of the reported sightings are early in the day or in the evening, when it might be challenging to see anything clearly.

Years ago, I was out on a lengthy trail run at Huddart Park. It was late in the day and the sun was low in the horizon. I was switching back and forth on a heavily wooded stretch of trail.

I came around the corner and off in the distance, I saw what looked like a MASSIVE snake slithering across the middle of the trail! I stopped dead in my tracks. I’d seen snakes before, but this thing was bigger than anything I’d seen before.

I slowly took a few steps towards it. Oddly, the snake wasn’t moving. I got a bit closer and it became all too apparent what I was looking at was NOT a snake.

I was looking at the gnarled branch of a tree. Maybe it fell onto the trail. Maybe some kid left it there. While I was POSITIVE it was a snake, the reality was something entirely different.

Our senses betray us sometimes. They can mislead us. This is not to say that ALL of the reports around Sasquatch sightings are due to poor vision, tricks of the mind, and/or poor lighting. But, ‘some’ of them certainly ARE attributable to the aforementioned.

Sherman and I are headed to Eureka. We stumbled onto a report from an experienced Western naturalist about a possible sighting in Sequoia Park right next to the Sequioa Park Zoo. Perhaps we’ll take a stroll through the zoo as well.
